In the 1500s, explorers discovered an island that was covered with wild grapes. The island was later named Marthas Vineyard. It is located about 7 miles off of the coast and became a part of the state of Massachusetts. The island measures about 10 miles wide and 24 miles long. Centuries later, the Vineyard has grown to include six major towns, including Vineyard Haven, Edgartown and Oaks Bluff.

Vineyard Haven is known as the commercial district and offers a lot of shopping opportunities; Oaks Bluff has a great night life and lively entertainment. Vineyard Haven is the home of the island’s Chamber of Commerce office. This office also serves as the local tourism office. Chappaquidick Island is nearby and day trips are available by ferry from the town of Edgartown. Many wealthy and famous celebrities use Marthas Vineyard as a getaway, some owning their own beachfront homes. This fact gives a boost to the tourism business on the island, which is a major part of the economy.
